GROUPGRUB GROUP DINING DECISION APP: Inclusive Design for Individuals with Dietary Needs
GroupGrub is a mobile technology that facilitates efficient group dining decisions and helps those with dietary needs find suitable restaurants. The app utilises accessibility design to de-stigmatize users with special diets.

This report presents the developmental process and usability testing findings of GroupGrub. In our ideation phase, we narrowed our design’s focus to de-stigmatization and group-decision making since our initial interview insights suggest that individuals with dietary requirements tend to have low satisfaction when dining out with groups. We brainstormed demographically diverse personas (18-65 y/o) and text scenarios to ensure that GroupGrub will suit different situations of use. We then referenced relevant technologies such as Mr Yum, Kahoot and Tinder as inspirations for GroupGrub’s voting, filtering and tagging functions.

A prototype featuring voting as its core function is then iterated and developed. Our design is informed by usability rationales such as visibility, consistency, user freedom and constraints.
Lastly, we conducted five usability testings to evaluate the effectiveness of GroupGrub’s prototype. Qualitative insights are gathered through semi-structured zoom interviews using Observation and Think-aloud, while quantitative findings are collected through an online questionnaire. The evaluation of our findings reveal that GroupGrub needs urgent improvements on user freedom, confusing languages and error prevention.
